The circular economy has become the darling of sustainability narratives—reduce waste, reuse materials, recycle what’s left. It’s a tidy story that lets businesses claim progress while doing the bare minimum. But let’s be honest—this is sustainability on autopilot, and it’s stalling the real change we desperately need. At its core, this approach is reductionist thinking run amok. It shrinks sprawling, interconnected crises into feel-good metrics: "We recycled X% more," or "We cut emissions by Y%." These sound impressive on paper but do little to address root causes. Worse, they give cover to systems that perpetuate harm, making “less bad” the benchmark for success. Reductionism like this is dangerous because it focuses on symptoms, not systems. It encourages us to celebrate small wins while the larger battle is being lost. A thinner plastic wrapper or slightly improved recycling rate might be better than nothing, but when the bar is set so low, we risk mistaking activity for progress. Take SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. I had the privilege of helping craft this goal, and the ambition behind it was crystal clear: we needed systems that aligned consumption and production with the planet’s ability to regenerate. It was a call to action for businesses, governments, and individuals to rethink the way we produce and consume. But years later, progress is painfully slow. Why? Because we’re still fiddling at the edges. Instead of transforming systems, we’re tinkering with individual components. A thinner plastic wrapper or a marginally higher recycling rate isn’t a victory—it’s a distraction. It diverts attention from the deeper systemic changes needed to address overproduction, overconsumption, and waste. The hard truth is this: no amount of recycling or material efficiency will fix systems that are fundamentally unsustainable.The Circular Economy’s False Comfort
The circular economy, as it’s widely practiced, is a prime example of this flawed thinking. Recycling rates inch upward, yet virgin material production soars. Products are “designed for reuse,” but most never see a second life. Companies pat themselves on the back for cutting waste while ignoring the sprawling impacts of their broader business models. Even worse, the circular economy can lead to unintended consequences. Consider fast fashion. Many brands tout their recycling initiatives, offering discounts in exchange for old clothing. On the surface, this seems like progress. In reality, it encourages overconsumption, fueling the very systems driving environmental degradation. This rebound effect undermines good intentions, making the circular economy not just ineffective but actively harmful.The Case for Net-Positive Systems
What’s needed now is a leap forward—a shift from circular excuses to net-positive systems. True sustainability isn’t about harm reduction; it’s about regeneration. It means leaving the environment, communities, and economies stronger than we found them. In net-positive systems, success isn’t measured by how little we extract but by how much we give back. Take regenerative agriculture: it doesn’t stop at using fewer chemicals or cutting emissions. It restores soil health, boosts biodiversity, sequesters carbon, and creates economic resilience. It’s a system that heals while it feeds, solving problems instead of merely mitigating them. Net-positive systems represent a radical departure from reductionist thinking. They challenge us to move beyond doing less harm and embrace solutions that actively regenerate ecosystems, restore biodiversity, strengthen communities, and enhance economic resilience.What GPM is Doing Differently

Incremental efficiency gains won’t tackle overproduction, overconsumption, or inequity.
